Eight situations temporarily unsuitable for massage
By Nick James
The core of a
massage chair
is massage, which involves the use of mechanical force to press, squeeze, knead, roll, and vibrate the human body, achieving the effects of relaxing muscles and improving blood circulation. Some
electric massage chairs
may also have additional functions such as heating, magnetic fields, or electrical stimulation.
Firstly, when massage is applied to the human body, there are some taboos. Generally, the following
situations are not suitable for massage
:
1. Undiagnosed spinal injuries. For example, cervical and lumbar injuries caused by lifting heavy objects, falling, vehicle rear-end collisions, jumping, straining, etc., should not be massaged blindly without examination and X-rays to confirm the diagnosis. If there is sudden neck, back, or waist pain with no obvious cause, it is even more dangerous, as it could be a very serious condition like an aortic dissection or even cancer.
2. Acute infectious diseases. Infectious diseases of the skin, muscles, and bones, such as erysipelas, abscesses, cellulitis, purulent arthritis, osteomyelitis, and tuberculosis of the bone and joint, can be aggravated by massage. It is also not suitable to blindly massage when there is severe pneumonia.
3. Skin lesions or skin diseases at the massage site. For example, burns, unhealed wounds, skin ulcers in diabetic patients, skin damage caused by athlete's foot, etc., are not suitable for massage, as they can easily lead to skin infections and non-healing conditions.
4. Local areas of various malignant tumors. Massaging away from the tumor site and choosing appropriate acupoints can potentially improve immunity. However, massaging the tumor site may promote tumor metastasis or cause local damage.
5. Areas with a tendency to bleed or that are actively bleeding. Massage directly presses and stimulates blood vessels, promoting blood circulation. Therefore, if you have low platelets, or hereditary hemophilia, or other blood disorders, massage can cause skin bruising and bleeding, and even pose a life-threatening risk. If there is internal bleeding due to trauma, massage should not be performed. If there is swelling in the limbs with no clear cause, do not massage blindly.
6. Severe osteoporosis. If the control of massage force is not good, it may cause fractures.
7. The waist of menstruating women or pregnant women should not be massaged. Massaging the waist during menstruation may increase the risk of bleeding or prolong the period; massaging the waist during pregnancy may cause miscarriage. However, gentle massage on the neck or legs is still acceptable.
8. Severe internal diseases, extreme fatigue, after drinking, or fasting. These individuals may not be able to withstand the force of massage and may easily lead to unexpected situations.
